A day late and a dollar short

So I am not the type to usually blog without pictures, but I see everyone else doing it so I am going to also. It has been an interesting few days here at our home. Dan's Grandma passed away on our Wednesday evening. She had complications with Pnuemonia. So Dan had arrangements to fly out Thursday morning leaving from Adelaide, then Sydney to San Francisco then on the Salt Lake city. Well before he even left Adelaide they were delayed for a while and he was going to miss the Sydney to San Fran flight. They had it all worked out for him to stay in Sydney and fly out the next morning (friday). That would still give him enough time to get to Idaho in time for the funeral. So let me back up a little. While at the Adelaide airport he ran into the AP missionaries and one of them happens to be from Preston Id where the funeral was going to be, so Dan offered to call his family for him while he was there. After arriving in Sydney, Dan being the adventurous type, decided that since he was in Sydney he would take a train to the Sydney Oprah House and lone behold there was going to be a concert that night. He tried to get tickets but they were sold out. A few minutes later a lady walks up to him and says she has 2 extra tickets and would sell him one for $50. Dan opens his wallet and says "All I have is $25"and the lady sells him the ticket. Notice he is buying the ticket with all the money in his wallet. He throughly enjoyed the symphony concert and was so happy he was able to do that. The next morning he makes it to the airport and what do you know but our hometeacher from Colorado has been in Australia on business and is on the same flight as Dan so they got to spend some time visiting with each other. They couldn't sit together on the plane but did visit some. Then Dan gets to LAX and what next?? He runs into my moms cousin Shelly. Then on to Utah he goes to meet his Aunt and cousin who graciously drive him to Logan. I couldn't believe that Dan knew someone in every airport he was in for this trip. And Dan and I got the biggest kick out of his Aunts comment to him when she realized that Dan had shown up with NO money when she said "Dan is a day late and a dollar short" And she was right on! (thus the post title)

I on the other hand am glad Dan has this opportunity to be with his family but didn't know how hard it would be to have him gone so far away! He has travelled for work before so it is not like we aren't use to him being gone once in a while but being so far with such a time difference is hard. We really have to plan if we want to talk to each other, and I feel like I really have to make decisions on my own. I am very grateful though for our friends here who have been so kind and thoughtful to us. Tonight Sara has been complaining of her stomach hurting for a few days but no fever, no vomiting etc. So tonight I go to Webmd wondering if I should be concerned about appendicitis (sp?) and of course being such a worry wart I think I should take her in to be looked at but it is 8 at night. I call my friend and she offers for her husband and brother to give Sara a blessing and then is willing to stay with my children if I want or she will even go with me and Sara to the hospital. Sara received a blessing and has been able to go to sleep and I was comforted knowing that I think she has just hurt some muscles from coughing from a cold she has had. I am grateful for kind friends and for the Gospel knowledge and especially for the Priesthood since my husband is so far away. Certainly makes me appreciate what I do have when he is home! Just for posterity sake I will also mention how much I hate that we can't trust people now a day. Whitney went with me to the grocery store today and forgot her purse in the shopping cart. We realize it about 20-30 minutes later and go back. To no avail did we find her purse. We asked around the shops and checked garbage cans but it was no where to be found. The really sad part was when a gentleman told me that rarely do they have purses or wallets turned in. It was sad and I hate when we have to learn these lessons the hard way but I think we have all had to do it at some point. Whitney had a fair amount of both American and Australian money in her purse that made some very dishonest person pretty happy. It makes me sad to think there is not much honesty left.

It is scary to think about the amount of honesty that is vanishing from the world. That is so amazing Dan met with someone at every airport. He really was a day late and a dollar short- but it's OK. I can tell Heavenly Father is looking after you all. xx

That is an amazing story Cami! I think Dan was being watched over. Very cool!

I had to come back and comment on the your observations of having Dan so far away. We are pretty use to Micah traveling and sometimes I think I over compensate for having to make so many decisions while he is gone. Then when he is home I have to constantly ask his opinion and then I drive myself and him nuts! It is a tricky balance! :) Glad that you don't have to do it often!

What home teacher did Dan see in the airport? That is crazy. You know what all that means, right? You are extremely popular and have a million friends!

Love reading your blog.

G'day mate!

It sure was nice to see Dan this weekend. I wasn't able to go to up to Idaho with Preston. But I got to see him at Lara's on Monday! It was great to catch up in person.
